Brandon Sanderson makes a Redditor's dream come true

Ahaha, Once you're done with that, you're going to read the rest of his books and be hooked forever! MUHUAHAHAHAHAHA. '-'
[–]Lumarin 2 points
Ha-haaa, thank you so much, it's at here in the 5th part. I love you, may you forever be serenaded by the most luscious women and handsome men, for you are truly a scholar and gentlewoman.
Now all I need is a release date... XD

Mistborn works quite well as a stand-alone book, and was the first book I read by Brandon. I would suggest Mistborn if you like the magic elements more, whilst I would suggest Warbreaker or Elantris if you want a more political setting. All of his books have great magic systems, it's just that Mistborn seems more centered around the magic and learning how the magic has influenced the world, whilst Elantris or Warbreaker seems more about the characters and how they change the world.
That said, they're all fantastic books. If you want to start somewhere and get a feel for his works before you buy anything, you can download Warbreaker free here(Click versions to go directly to the versions of the book, the bottom one is the full book as released by Tor).

O.o, I'm going to have to look around then. The story seemed like it could have gone down so many different paths that I wanted to just throw money at the man until he wrote the book and sold it to me.

I absolutely love Brandon's books, I've read every book of his except for the Alcatraz books. I kept up with the Warbreaker writing back when he was releasing the chapters online....In his directory of writing was a book he started, only 2(3?) chapters or so, where it was about a boy in a world where chalk drawings would come to life(chaklings? chalklings?) and this boy had studied it extensively, even though he wasn't chosen to be one of the people with the power to make them come to life.
The magic system was superb and the writing was absolutely fantastic, but I can't find those chapters anymore and even if he's not going to continue it, I really want to read them again. :(

All you need to produce an ebook is a writer(duh), an editor, and a small group of dedicated persons who are willing to read a draft version and offer criticisms. That's really it. On the other hand, making a real book requires those same things AND the capability to buy paper/ink, produce said books with an artist's work on the front, and then store and ship them for sale, which obviously turns the price from $1 to a $25-$30 hardcover book(including markup, of course)..

You're completely fucking up your analogies in what appears to be an attempt to troll.
Benefits versus costs. Let's roll with your analogy. A computer will let you communicate, calculate, and even allow you to work from home, whilst being a nearly endless source of entertainment. The (exceedingly small) chance of it setting on fire and burning your house down is outweighed by how much it improves your life.
Now, lets apply this to sperm donation. Benefits: Nothing, you have no rights to the child whatsoever. Costs: Anywhere between nothing and having your income decimated and throwing you into poverty. As you can see, there is not a single benefit to be had to outweigh the (even if it's extraordinarily tiny)chance of someone fucking you over.

Supposedly the last level is a sandbox, but I'm personally waiting for the PC version. Also, they've stated that they're likely to release a map editor and possible multiplayer in the future, should the game do well.
[–]Lumarin 3 points
Some people like worldbuilding though. Also, if there's any form of map editor at all for the PC version, it'll be worth way more than the $15 spent. As it stands, the fluid mechanics and worldbuilding coupled with the low price is enough to make me buy it. Apparently, they're considering multiplayer and a map editor.
[–]Lumarin 1 point
Indeed. Also, it shows what people in your circles have +1'd on google search. I don't know if it shows up anywhere else though.

In 2010 they tried again with a modest provision granting anonymity only between arrest and charge but it was abandoned because of vigorous objection from feminists, who worry that women are less likely to accuse if the suspect is not named.
What. The. Fuck.
Who in their right mind would avoid reporting a crime due to the fact that the person accused wouldn't be named until charged? It'd be even better if they were anonymous until found guilty though.
Good article. There needs to be more like this out there.

Bullshit, you're using the same reasoning you accuse me of, you claim that false accusations are a bolt from the blue one in a billion kind of thing. Even if that's true, the consequences of both are not in proportion to their severity and impact on a person's life.
A rapist, either innocent or guilty and proven one or the other, will have his life destroyed, whereas an innocent man, found guilty or innocent, will also have his life destroyed.
No, what you are doing is building equivalencies to rape that fit your ideology and make men seem more victimized. You also may not say that you don't think rape is a big deal, but you betray that attitude by having the rights of accused rapists your biggest concern.
The rights of the accused should always be someone's concern, no matter the charge. That a person can have their life absolutely destroyed just because someone accused them of something is absolutely sickening. A person should be found guilty or innocent of a crime in a court of law before their name is smeared and their life is destroyed. What if, for example, you could accuse someone of embezzling funds from a company, and from then on people called you an embezzler, and companies no longer wished to hire you, and your friends and family didn't want to keep you around for being a 'thief'. Your words betray an ideology that you believe that everyone accused of rape actually did it. What if all accused murderers had to prove their innocence instead of having to be proved guilty? What if all thieves had to do the same? I honestly believe that all people are innocent until proven guilty. Obviously, you do not.
Unreported rapes are a social problem. They should be reported more often and people should be encouraged to come forward immediate, while evidence is still there; you shouldn't throw away a person's constitutional rights simply because they're under-reported. As for faulty prosecution, the accused still have rights. Those protections are in place for the accused for a reason, to throw those out just because a person was accused of one crime rather than another crime is a disservice to all citizens.
I'm not saying that false rape accusations don't suck when they happen, but so does having a comet hit your house.
This has to be one of the most inane comments I have ever read. You just used absolutely breathtakingly stupid logic. By what you have just said, just because something may be rare, we should ignore it? By that logic, Genocide should be ignored. Hell, it impacts people on the greatest of scales imaginable, but hey, there's only been what, one alleged genocide every 10 to twenty years? Fuck you. You're using a false equivalency; a crime versus a natural disaster, you're downplaying the event and its probability to occur to suit your purposes.
In addition, the statistical probability of something happening has absolutely no bearing on this discussion. The consequences of crimes in relation to their severity is. Rapes are criminally prosecuted to the furthest extent of the law, and after someone has been found guilty, they themselves are likely to be raped and stuck in jail for a great portion of their lives and once release they will have no economic recourse, as well as having their name permanently enshrined on the sex offender's list. False rape accusers on the other hand get to sit back and watch as they destroy a person's life with no negative impact on their own lives.
[–]Lumarin 10 points
People will pay some lip service to "equality" and then spend a million years focusing on false rape accusations rather than the giant elephant in the room that is actual rape.
The thing is, false rape accusations can cause far worse consequences for a man than a rape can for someone, thus, in the men's rights subreddit, it's talked about so often because of how terrible it is. Yet, if you ask anyone on there that isn't a troll whether or not rape is a terrible horrible crime, in all instances you will receive a response of 'yes, it's one of the worst things you can do to a person short of removing body parts or killing them.'
False rape accusations are only talked about on /mr so often because of the fact that EVEN IF YOU ARE PROVEN COMPLETELY INNOCENT, you have to deal with the psychological trauma of all your friends and family believing you're a rapist during the trial. You lose your job and likely your home during this time. Your name is smeared through the newspapers. Then, after you've been proven innocent(not just found "not guilty"), the articles still appear online, finding a job is harder than it should be due to the documentation saying that you went to trial for rape. Thus, unless you work extremely hard to have your innocence publicly declared, you'll be homeless and destitute. If you're a college student, you can be expelled for years, even if proven innocent in a court of law, due to the far more lax standards used by schools and universities.
No one, NO ONE, is saying that rape isn't a terrible thing to happen to someone. Rape is horrible, but false accusations can do more long lasting harm. At least after you're raped you aren't worried about starving to death in a back alley somewhere because you can't find a job. At least after you're raped you still have family to console you and help your through your pain. At least after you're raped you still have people that will love you, and you might even find somebody to love in the future. If you're falsely accused, chances are that you will lose all of that, you will never find a significant other, the stigma of 'rapist' will be forever plastered upon your forehead and you will lose EVERYTHING. Then, after your name is cleared, and you've lost everything dear to you, the person who falsely accused you doesn't even get a slap on the wrist, no one will prosecute them, and they're free to do it again in the future if they want to. There are documented cases of this happening, and people say, hey, women would never do such a thing, and they brush it off like it's not even worth the time to consider.

You can download the eboot version of FF7/8/9/etc and play them on a hacked psp(the PSP 3000 has permanent hacks nowadays), provided you've got a memstick with 2GB+ of space(they're between 1.2 and 1.8GB each). So there's no reason not to have it for your psp.
Or if you prefer, you can copy your own cds and make your own eboots using psx2psp...I've had to do that to several games that you can't really find online, or when I didn't want to spend 2 days downloading them from rapidshare links...

Try this
Literally, you just follow the steps to install the JB, then install the screensaver hack with whatever images you want. Suddenly, no more dead people. Takes all of 10 minutes.

I agree with the others commenting here, although I should note that if you want to see his writing style without having to go for a whole trilogy at once, pick up Elantris to see how he writes. Definitely a great author in my opinion. His magic systems are fantastic.
I must say though, I was sad when he discontinued writing the book where the characters' magic was chalk drawings that came to life. When I read those first two(three?) chapters online, I really wanted him to continue and finish it, but then he got WoT and completely stopped writing that.

Yes, I didn't shell out any money either myself, so I don't have any personal stake in this, but the people saying that everything is peachy-keen have to be retarded out of their minds. It's not an okay thing for Valve to do this.
[–]Lumarin 1 point
Yes, yes we are, it's a very damn fine line they're riding there. If someone does their damnedest to insinuate, without being explicit, that you'll get y if you do X, and then when you do x and don't get y, you'd better be pissed off, especially when it cost you money.
[–]Lumarin 2 points
THIS is what most people are angry about, not about entitlement/etc, it's the fact that people were tricked into buying games(yeah yeah, "Oh noes", shut up). If it were something that were free to do, you could just say you were tricked into having fun or that it was an ARG prank/lololol, but the fact that people paid/had to pay money to participate is what enrages me.

Essentially what you said here is the gist of my reasoning, their entire marketing ploy is a massive flop. The price point between steam and the outside deals is completely terrible, but it would have been fine if the game had actually released early for those who pre-ordered through steam. Yet, as it stands, everyone can buy the game for $25 instead of $45, which leaves Steam as the oddball out, completely destroying themselves. After all, why buy through steam when you could buy from best buy(shudder) or amazon for almost half price?
[–]Lumarin 1 point
Exactly this, it's not ok for supporting indie games. If they wanted to support indie games they would have just put said games on sale and not tied it into a fake promise to release the damn game early, the games didn't sell on their own merit and don't deserve shit; where, in fact, if the indie companies knew that the game wasn't going to release early, then I have lost every bit of respect for them and will suggest to everyone I know to never buy anything from them. And for those who say "You're getting it early, hurrr", No, Go fuck yourselves you prissy rules lawyering bitches. That's like saying I'm going to give you cake and then shoving a 20yr old fruit cake up your ass, hey you got cake didn't you? Those who didn't pre-order will in fact get it at the same time as those who pre-ordered, and will get it CHEAPER.
It's being released at midnight tonight, and everyone who pre-ordered through steam who knew that beforehand wouldn't have bought it from steam, they would have bought the PS3 version for $35(less than the preorder price on steam) which INCLUDES a copy for PC, or they would have bought it for TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS instead of 40, and been able to play at the same goddamn time. What of the people who bought the potato pack because they wanted to play portal 2 earlier than the initial release date, and had good reason to think so due to implications from the company that made the game? That's riding a damn fine line with fraud and false marketing.
Sure, the games are great, I already had most of them and didn't buy the potato pack myself, but what of the people who wouldn't buy the games themselves, any of them, without an incentive like this? What of the people who didn't like any of the games? Is it then money well spent? No. My outrage has nothing to do with entitlement here, it's due to the fact that they essentially stated that you could play portal 2 early IF YOU BOUGHT ADDITIONAL GAMES FROM THEM, even if they didn't explicitly state so, they knew exactly what they were doing when they put up the potato pack on G@H and said, "Help Release Portal 2 Early, play the 13 indie games in the potato sack to reboot glados". They knew people would buy the games to get the game released early because of this, and then followed that by releasing the game completely on schedule.
Ignore everything else and think about this for a second, if you knew, for a fact, that you were going to play the game monday at midnight, guaranteed and nothing else, no ARG/etc, would you buy it for $25 if you could, or $40+? What if you knew that pre-ordering at $40+ wouldn't net you ANYTHING, when you could pre-order at $25?
Valve has lost all of my respect as a gaming company for this, ARGs usually end with a prize, this ended with nothing. The puzzles were extreme and very interesting, but the end fizzled so badly that it left a bad taste in my mouth.
For those saying that the customers got something good out of it, etc, I agree, BUT, it's a terribly slimy marketing technique akin to that of a used car salesman, and I expected better from Valve.
TL;DR: They enticed players to buy something they wouldn't have, with an implicit incentive, and then didn't give said incentive. If it were something that didn't entice people to spend money and was something like solving puzzle or answering nonsense questions for small amounts of time off/etc, I would have said fine, it's glados, etc, etc, etc blah blah. But this, this is going too far. Tricking people into spending money for something and then not giving what you implied you would give is disgusting.
P.S. I'm going to enjoy the shit out of portal 2, but I am not going to buy another thing from valve unless they do everything in their power to redeem themselves of the image of a used car salesman. This was one of the dirtiest flops of a marketing ploy I have seen in my life, and it's likely to lose them a lot of their fan base.

Pretty much this, perhaps also have a section with explicit moderation policy? Pretty much what the posts on this sub have stated, but on the sidebar so that everyone can see them when the posts disappear.
[–]Lumarin 2 points
Exactly, while I am personally uncircumcised, I would have never forgiven my parents had they done it to me. It's like giving your child a tattoo or tearing their ear lobes off upon birth, completely unnecessary unless there's a real valid medical emergency reason to do it(say, said ear lobes are infected and aren't responding to anti-biotics and the infection is spreading towards the brain, etc).

Welcome! I'm certainly glad to see you and AnnArchist both as the mods in here, as while annarchist has been more extreme than myself in the mensrights views that I have seen, both you and AnnArchist are very professional in your comments, and speak respectfully even with those who disagree with you.
I must also agree with the moderation ideology that you and AnnArchist are setting up, let votes by the members dictate the consensus and only ban or delete those who actively spam(manhood101 comment in MR have to be the most annoying I've ever seen).
